Faculty of Humanities

The School of Humanities includes 7 programs of study, which offer a total of 24 disciplines on thoughts, cultures, histories, languages, literatures, society and psychology. The school offers students interested in the world's languages, cultures, and civilizations a unique range of resources and opportunities for study, research and personal growth. A number of faculty members specialize in the languages, cultures and histories of the countries of East Asia, particularly those bordering the Japan Sea. Courses specific to Japan include Japanese History, Japanese Literature, Japanese Linguistics and Philology, Japanese Thought and Ethics, Japanese Culture, Japanese Archeology and Japanese Language Education. Cultural exchange and relations among and between China, Korea, Russia and Japan comprise another area of study.

Faculty of Human Development

The Faculty of Human Development consists of two departments, (1) Educational Sciences, which is based on human developmental sciences and is divided into Educational Psychology, Teacher Education, and Human Development and Welfare courses, and (2) Environment and Humanity, which trains individuals who can contribute to the promotion of local sports for health maintenance, comprehensively respond to environmental problems and engage in environmental protection, and who have the ability to communicate globally.

Faculty of Economics

The Faculty of Economics is an integrated social science faculty that provides crosssectional study of Economics, Business Administration and the Law. The daytime course includes seven courses that allow students to become familiar with their future professions and to study with a clear sense of purpose. In addition, there is an evening course designed for working adults whose distinguishing feature is the diversity of students. The Faculty provides a large number of special lectures by businessleaders who play an active part in the community.

Faculty of Science

The mission of the faculty of science is to research fundamental principles and rules governing the natural world. Through cutting edge research, we strive to nurture students with both technical expertise and problem solving abilities. Moreover, in order to cultivate the ability to solve various problems from a broad perspective, basic courses outside the major subjects of study are also compulsory. In addition, we are also making efforts to establish an education system suitable for current needs through e-learning and courses in scientific English tought by native English speakers.

Faculty of Medicine

With the theme of merging Eastern and Western medicine in mind, we aim to develop highly motivated students who will become proficient physicians and nurses. The Faculty of Medicine has two schools: The School of Medicine and the School of Nursing. The Faculty of Pharmaceutical Sciences is also located on the same campus, allowing close communication and cooperation. The School of Medicine has introduced an integrated curricula for each internal organ as well as small group discussions based on problem-based learning. The School of Nursing provides high-grade education with an emphasis on the integration of humanity and science.

Faculty of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences

The Faculty of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences has a history of more than a century, and provides a six-year course of pharmacist training and a four-year course of drug design researcher cultivation. The education is offered through a variety of disciplines ranging from traditional medicines to the life sciences. The medical department, the university hospital, and the institute of natural medicine are located on the same campus and effectively collaborate in programs for developing pharmacists and researchers.

Faculty of Engineering

In tune with the changes in society and rapid technological innovations in recent years, engineering education is also becoming more diverse, distinctive and specialized. Moreover, based on engineering ethics and bioethics, those who can contribute to local and international communities are being actively sought. From this perspective, at the Faculty of Engineering of University of Toyama the focus has been on not only widespread and in-depth learning and acquiring specialized knowledge and skills, but also on originality. This allows knowledge and skills to be put to practical use, environmental education that is friendly to the earth and human beings, language and information education for the global community and cultivating well-rounded researchers and technocrats.

Faculty of Art and Design

The Faculty of Art and Design consists of one department and provides five courses. We aim to train both “performers”, who inherit and develop the philosophy and skills of art and culture, and “managers”, who understand art and culture deeply and promote them in society. Besides specialized courses, we offer interdisciplinary education offering a wide range of culture, and an original registration system to meet the changes of the social environment and the various needs of the region flexibly.

Graduate School of Economics

The Graduate School of Economics provides two programs with majors in ‘Regional and Economic Policy’ and ‘Corporate Management’, to develop business persons with technical knowledge, and researchers in economics, business administration and law. A particular feature of the graduate school is interdisciplinary study across economics, business administration and law that allows students to explore the informatization of economic society, globalization, and similar issues. The graduate school has a large number of subjects that focus on practical, creative efforts to solve real problems in many areas of business, as well as subjects that take into account disciplines in various new scientific domains.

The institute's program covers all the cultural activities of human beings, based on the idea of a comprehensive art study. We pursue an original mode of expression which is applicable to society, so our research is pragmatic and its methods diverse. Through education and research, we aim to develope human resources which play a leading role in increasing social creativitv, and help create compassionate, community-based culture with art products in future society.

Graduate School of Innovative Life Science

The Graduate School of Innovative Life Science provides cutting-edge knowledge and skills in order to elucidate functions of the central nervous system and related bio-systems, and develops functional materials and information-machinery complexes to benefit the maintenance and support of human health. Our goal is to enable graduates to assume positions of leadership in the multi-disciplinary fields of innovative life sciences, welfare for the elderly, advanced medicine, and bio-environment. This is the first attempt in Japan to integrate medicine, pharmaceutical science, basic science, and engineering for the purpose of collaborative education in the field of life science. The faculty also collaborates with students who have special needs, creating a novel style of education and research which incorporating their viewpoints and sensitivities.
